About Lesson
The Ontological Argument is a philosophical argument for God’s existence based on the concept of God itself. It goes like this:
-
God is defined as the greatest possible being—one who is all-powerful, all-knowing, and perfectly good.
-
A being that exists in reality is greater than one that exists only in the mind.
-
If God exists only in the mind, then a greater being could be imagined—one that exists in reality.
-
Therefore, God must exist in reality, not just in the mind.
In short, if it’s even possible that a greatest possible being exists, then that being must exist. This argument is more abstract than others, but it’s been defended by many philosophers throughout history.
